Understanding and Using My Neurodiverse Strengths

Recognise your strengths. Understand your differences. Discover how to work with them.

We often spend so much time focusing on what we find difficult that we forget to recognise what we do well. This practical 90-minute masterclass with Arran Smith explores how your neurodiversity influences the way you think, feel and work. Through personal experiences, reflection and a simple Strengths Map, you’ll begin to understand your abilities, recognise what supports you and explore how to use your strengths in everyday life.

Understanding yourself is the starting point

When we talk about neurodiversity, we often focus on the difficulties. Assessments, diagnoses, education and workplace conversations can concentrate on what we struggle with rather than what we do well.

But what if we started looking at the whole person?

Every individual has strengths and difficulties. We all think, process information, communicate and approach situations in different ways. Understanding those differences can help us recognise our abilities and find better ways of working and living.

Understanding and Using My Neurodiverse Strengths is a practical and personal masterclass designed to help you explore your own thinking, feelings and experiences.

Hosted by Arran Smith, a severely dyslexic adult with around 20 years of experience in dyslexia, neurodiversity, education and workplace inclusion, the session combines lived experience with practical activities and research-informed discussion.

We’ll look at what neurodiversity means, why we often focus on difficulties and how recognising our strengths can change the way we understand ourselves.

We’ll explore the emotional side of neurodiversity, including confidence, self-belief and how different environments influence the way we feel and perform.

You’ll begin creating your own Strengths Map, identifying what you do well, when those strengths appear and how you could use them more intentionally.

We’ll also explore how strengths and difficulties work alongside each other, including the role of reasonable adjustments, technology, AI and supportive environments.

Using the See Differently approach of Understand, Challenge, Explore and Act, we’ll move from understanding yourself to identifying practical changes you can make.

This isn’t about pretending that difficulties don’t exist or that every neurodivergent person has the same strengths. It’s about understanding your individual experiences and recognising that there may be different ways to achieve what you want.

The question is simple: What are my strengths, and how can I use them?

Does any of this sound familiar?

You’ve been diagnosed with dyslexia, ADHD, autism or another neurodifference and want to understand more about yourself beyond the label.

You think you might be neurodivergent and are beginning to explore why you think or experience things differently.

You’ve spent years focusing on what you find difficult and sometimes struggle to recognise what you’re good at.

You know you have abilities but find it difficult to use them consistently at work or in everyday life.

You want to understand how your environment and the people around you influence your confidence and wellbeing.

You’re ready to explore different ways of working and living that better reflect who you are.

What you’ll discover about yourself

Explore your individual strengths and difficulties and learn how understanding both can help you move forward.

Understand your differences

Explore how neurodiversity influences thinking and processing and why no two neurodivergent people have exactly the same experiences.

See beyond your difficulties

Understand why assessments and systems often concentrate on what people struggle with and why we need to recognise strengths alongside difficulties.

Recognise how you feel

Explore how your experiences in education and everyday life can influence confidence and the way you see yourself.

Identify your strengths

Begin recognising your abilities and the situations where your individual strengths become most useful.

Connect strengths with support

Explore what could change

Find practical ways to use your strengths more intentionally and identify small changes that could make everyday life easier.

What we’ll explore together

Understanding neurodiversity

What neurodiversity means, how our brains can work differently and why recognising human variation matters. We’ll explore dyslexia, ADHD, autism, dyspraxia and other neurodifferences.

Moving beyond the deficit model

Why assessments and diagnoses often concentrate on difficulties and how we can develop a more balanced understanding of the individual.

Different thinking and complementary strengths

Explore research perspectives including Dr Helen Taylor’s work on complementary cognition and how different approaches to thinking may benefit individuals and groups.

Understanding the emotional experience

Reflect on how you feel about your neurodiversity and your experiences at home and in education and work. Explore the influence of confidence and self-belief.

Creating your Strengths Map

Identify what you do well, what comes naturally, what you enjoy and when your strengths appear. Explore abilities such as communication, problem-solving, responding to questions and generating ideas.

Recognising strengths and difficulties together

Understand how strengths and difficulties can exist alongside each other and how reasonable adjustments and supportive environments can help.

Technology and reducing cognitive load

Explore how tools including AI and assistive technology can reduce effort spent on difficult tasks and create more opportunities to use your strengths.

Turning understanding into action

Consider how to change the narrative you have about yourself and identify small practical changes using the Understand – Challenge – Explore – Act approach.

What you’ll take away from the masterclass

Leave with a clearer understanding of yourself and practical ideas you can begin using in everyday life.

A clearer picture of your strengths

A better understanding of your abilities and the situations where you may be at your best.

Your personal Strengths Map

The beginnings of your own map connecting your strengths with real situations and opportunities to use them.

A more balanced understanding of yourself

New ways to recognise strengths and difficulties without allowing either to define everything about you.

Ideas for support and adjustments

Practical ideas for environments and approaches that could help you use your strengths while supporting areas you find difficult.

One practical step forward

An opportunity to choose a strength you want to use more intentionally and one change you can begin exploring.

Your questions answered

Do I need a formal neurodiversity diagnosis?

No. This masterclass is open to people with a diagnosis, those who identify as neurodivergent and anyone who is exploring their differences. You don’t need a label to begin understanding your strengths.

Is this just about dyslexia?

No. Although Arran shares experiences from his own dyslexia journey, the masterclass explores neurodiversity more broadly, including different ways of thinking, processing information and communicating. Every individual has their own combination of strengths and difficulties.

What if I don't know what my strengths are?

That’s absolutely fine. In fact, that is one of the main reasons for joining. We’ll explore how you can begin recognising strengths through your experiences, everyday activities and situations where things work well for you.

Will I have to share personal information?

No. There will be opportunities for personal reflection, but you can work through these privately. You are not expected to share anything you are uncomfortable discussing.

Will this help with difficulties as well as strengths?

Yes. The masterclass takes a balanced approach. We won’t ignore difficulties or suggest that recognising strengths makes challenges disappear. Instead, we’ll explore how strengths, support, adjustments and environments can work together.

Is this relevant to both work and everyday life?

Yes. We’ll explore examples from home, education, employment and everyday experiences. The focus is on understanding yourself and finding practical ways to use that understanding in different situations.

Will we look at AI and assistive technology?

Yes. Arran will share practical examples of using AI and technology to organise ideas, reduce cognitive load and support tasks that might otherwise require extra effort. Technology is one part of the session rather than the main focus.

Is this a diagnostic assessment or therapy session?

No. This is an educational and reflective masterclass based on lived experience, practical approaches and research-informed discussion. It does not provide a diagnosis, clinical assessment or individual therapy.

Understand. Challenge. Explore. Act.

Your strengths are part of your story. It’s time to understand them.
